Learning at home

Learning at Home

Our priority is simple yet powerful: we want to encourage independent reading and co-reading at home.

Why Reading is Our Focus

Reading is fundamental to your child's success across all areas of learning. When children develop strong reading skills, they:

  • Access learning across the entire curriculum more effectively
  • Build confidence as independent learners and thinkers (supporting our school vision)
  • Develop vocabulary that enhances their communication in all subjects
  • Strengthen their ability to engage with more complex learning as they progress

This approach aligns perfectly with our school values - helping children become ambitiousengaged, and to persevere in their learning journey.

What This Means for Different Year Groups

Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and Key Stage 1

For our youngest learners, the main priority for learning at home is to:

  • Share books together daily
    • this could be reading to your child, listening to them read, or exploring books together
  • Talk about stories and ask questions about what you've read
  • Make reading enjoyable through choosing books that match your child's interests
  • Create a regular reading routine that works for your family
  • Practise phonics sounds as they are introduced and taught in school

 Key Stage 2

As children progress through school, the children will start to read through the Accelerated Reader scheme from year 2. Reading in school and at home to encourage:

  • Independent reading for pleasure and learning
  • Continued co-reading where you read together and discuss books
  • Exploring different types of texts including fiction, non-fiction, and poetry
  • Connecting reading to real-life experiences and learning

How You Can Support at Home

Research shows that when parents support reading at home effectively, it makes a significant difference to children's progress. Here are some practical strategies:

  • Set aside regular time for reading each day, even if it's just 10-15 minutes
  • Create a comfortable reading space at home
  • Ask questions about what your child has read: "What was your favourite part?" "What do you think will happen next?"
  • Celebrate reading achievements, no matter how small
  • Visit the library together to choose new books
  • Be a reading role model
    • let your children see you reading too

Supporting All Learners

Reading at home can be adapted to suit all abilities and interests, and we're here to support you with this. Please don't hesitate to speak to your child's class teacher if you need guidance on how to make reading at home work best for your family.

Alongside reading your child can access their own Times table Rockstars from year 2-6 or visit the websites  below for more learning at home.
